PDF how-to
How to open a PDF
Most modern computers and phones can open PDFs without special paid software. You can usually click or tap the file and use your browser, a built-in viewer, or a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Quick answer
Double-click or tap the PDF first.
If your device has a default PDF viewer, the file should open immediately. If not, right-click or long-press the file and choose an app that supports PDF. Modern browsers can also display many PDFs directly.
Open a PDF in your browser
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can display many PDFs directly. Click a PDF link on a website or drag a local PDF into a browser tab. Browser viewers are convenient for reading, searching and printing, although advanced PDF features may require a dedicated reader.
Open a PDF on Windows
- 1. Double-click the PDF in File Explorer.
- 2. If Windows asks for an app, choose a browser or PDF reader.
- 3. To change the default later, use Open with and select the app you prefer.
Open a PDF on a Mac
Double-clicking a PDF normally opens it in the app associated with PDF files. macOS includes Preview, which can read PDFs and perform common viewing and annotation tasks. You can also choose another installed PDF app from Finder.
Open a PDF on iPhone, iPad or Android
Tap the PDF from Files, Downloads, Mail or another app. Mobile operating systems and browsers normally provide a built-in viewing path. If a specific file does not render correctly, save it locally and try a dedicated PDF reader.
Why won't my PDF open?
A PDF can fail to open because the download is incomplete, the file is damaged, the viewer is outdated, the file association is wrong, or the document uses a feature the viewer does not support. Try downloading the file again, opening it in another current viewer, and checking whether other PDFs open normally.
Can eggPDF open and edit a PDF?
eggPDF is not a general-purpose PDF reader. Its tools are focused on page operations such as merging, splitting, extracting and rotating. Use a normal viewer for reading; use eggPDF when you need to reorganize the file.
